FED: Govt "must" raise tobacco taxes: Cancer Council

The Cancer Council says the Rudd government must increase tobacco taxes if it's serious
about preventative reforms in health care.

Professor IAN OLVER .. chief executive of Cancer Council Australia .. says tobacco
addiction remains the nation's largest preventable cause of serious disease and death.

He says he's hopeful media speculation about a significant increase in the tobacco
taxes will become reality in next month's federal budget.

News Limited reports indicate a 13 dollar 50 packet of cigarettes could be increased
to 20 dollars .. staggered over three years .. to part-fund its health reform agenda.
