The ABS said petrol prices were also one of the biggest contributors to the annualrise in inflation, up 17.4 per cent over the year.

Vegetable prices were 25.1 per cent higher than the same time last year and hospitaland medical services 10 per cent higher, while the cost of fruit fell 8.6 per cent andcar prices dipped 1.4 per cent.

The rise came on top of a 0.7 per cent increase in the consumer price index in theDecember quarter.
